[ she's gonna do american sign language because idek where gangsta is set please tell us kohske and even though the anime uses JSL, we're typing in english so! ]
The alphabet's probably the best place to start. If you're struggling with some words you can spell them out -- it's not ideal, but people will understand it. [ which is the main thing.
so, here are some abc's, izumo. they'll follow with some defg's as well. ]
[ hmmm. the alphabet is definitely the best place to start and izumo will mime everything that alex is doing. she...actually my seem like she's picking up on it fairly quickly? rather, she has the hand shape down pretty well.
(look when you're an exorcist, you have to memorize a lot of things quickly and since she's a low key nerd—) ]
This is interesting. I've never thought that people would up with something like this. It makes to do so, though.
[ they can go over it a few times and when it looks like izumo has it down a bit quicker, she'll throw in some basic words like hello and goodbye, and also "danger" because they might need that. ]
I'd never used it before but both of my roommates are fluent in it, so... I wanted to try and pick it up.
It's pretty much second nature to them, Nicholas doesn't like to actually talk if he doesn't have to? But he's also very good at lip reading so sometimes it doesn't matter if you're signing what you're saying, as long as he can read your lips as you're saying it.
[ ooh!!!! now there's a good one to learn. izumo is going to make sure she commits this one to memory and will practice it a ton. what is it? you need to do an action 100 times before you sort of remember it??
though as alex explains a little lore to her—she'll calm down and frown. ]
I can't imagine not being able to hear. [ hmm. ] I don't think I'd be able to do anything if I couldn't.
[ in a situation with lots of apparent danger she’ll learn it in no time. possibly. ]
It’s probably what you’re used to that makes the difference. Nicholas has never been able to hear, so... you can’t really miss what you’ve never had.
I think they say something about other senses making up for one that you’re missing, don’t they? [ ignoring that that’s just fundamentally how twilights work — power and enhanced abilities at the cost of something else ]
[ she blinks, because... that’s the first time someone’s actually taken a guess at what a twilight is and. well. ]
Yeah. Pretty much? They’re born with greater than average strength, speed and agility but at the cost of their lifespan and normally some other thing like... well, being deaf.
Not all of them are super strong, but they all get assessed and have to wear dog tags with their information and strength ranking displayed.
[ well!! she mentioned the heighten strength and agility!! izumo has brain cells to rub together. and as alex describes it, she frowns. she doesn't like how that all sounds... ]
Yes? I've seen baby Twilights before. They're... human, in all but what they can do. And how people treat them.
[ hm. ]
It's not a spontaneous thing, it happened as an unexpected side effect of a drug soldiers used to take. Or, that's what I read. The effects of the drug pass on to their children, and that's a Twilight.
[ the mention of the drug was what izumo was waiting for. ...not that mutants couldn't exist (they totally could), but spontaneous mutations like that sound a bit too fantastical for her. ]
I see. [ and. well.... since this is a little important to her. for Reasons. ] How do they treat the children Twilights?
Like monsters. Or something to be abused and put down once they’ve achieved a purpose. [ like living breathing canon fodder ]
That’s more the older Twilights, but for every grown, high ranked Twilight there’s a lot of low ranked ones, or children who just can’t protect themselves from a mob that hates them for existing.
[ aand that's what izumo figured would the answer to that question. it's disgusting that she could see it coming a mile away. there's just a constant in regards to certain human qualities, isn't there? ]
But it isn't their fault.
[ izumo knows next to nothing about these children and she's angry for them. ]
[ it's not her problem. it isn't her world but it is alex's and she doesn't waste time to look directly at her. there's no way, right? from the way she speaks..... ]
I'm only one person. But... it's not fair to treat someone badly just because of what they can do. It's what they do with their skills that matters.
Anyone can hurt someone, you don't have to be superpowered for that.
[ ... for the sake of honesty: ]
Twilights scared me, at first. But... they scared me because I didn't know about them. Like a fear of the unknown? And I saw so many people interacting with them like normal, Twilights with families and kids, so... that was my issue, not theirs.
Some of them still scare me? Because some of them are very powerful and do use that to hurt people, but... a lot of them are just living. Same as all of us.
[ izumo can't relate to some of but there are parts of it that she can relate to and it's... well, there's no point in avoiding it but no point in coming completely clean about it either. ]
I know the feeling. [ which feeling? she won't clarify. ] It's always funny to listen to people talk about togetherness when they're afraid of those who aren't that different from them..
I understand being afraid. Initially, at least. [ twilights do still scare her, sometimes. some of them. but not all of them. ] If something's dangerous, a little fear is healthy.
But not if you're going to use it to remain ignorant, or spread that fear to everyone like them, so it turns into hate. If you're scared of something because you don't know it, then... that's a personal issue. That's what I think.

That'd be fine with me. Beginner or not, you know more than I do.

That's true, they certainly do. I've always wondered what sense made up for hearing loss.
[ guess that's something that she'll figure out..?? ]
no subject
I don’t know if it’s like... one specific sense. It could be any, I suppose.
Nicholas is a bit of an exception to the rule, I guess.
no subject
An exception? How so?

We don't have anything like that in my world, I think.

Although to be fair, I didn't really know either, until Worick and Nicholas saved me.

Some sort of super solider or human?

[ ... ]
For every Twilight that would abuse their strength, there’s a whole group who are just trying to survive. Or are bound by a contract.
And for every human who’s afraid of them anyway, there’s one that would do worse to a Twilight than that Twilight would do to them.

You help them, don't you?
