Indeed. Though I think they are less literal pirates in the sense of what I know, and more... freedom fighters who want to live their own way. They don't seem all that interested in stealing, for instance.
[TIME TO SAY MORE WORDS]
Lumpy is only a pirate so he can be the King of them, in fact.
Neither did I. That is still a mystery I'm trying to solve.
[Chiron is attacking this manga with the fervor of a scholar. Horse off the string]
But he must travel to different islands first. The way it works is there is an island with a treasure on it, that will make him the official King -- but finding it is extremely difficult. You need a special compass that will lock onto the magnetic field of each new island to progress, else you will sail the seas forever and die.
Supposedly... but given the depth of storytelling at work, I assume there will be other complications.
[Chiron already has One Piece theories. God is truly dead in this timeline]
Like for instance -- the Marines oppose his crew and make it difficult to progress, so he must survive his every encounter with them. And then every crew member has their own struggle to overcome.
[ length? babbly and rambling? involve a guy spending five years on an island sleeping with a goddess while panicking that his wife might not be being faithful to him? (enters a classical studies college class rage flashback ]
—- sprawling, long tale as well? I’ve never heard any of them before.
[Putting down the comic because he needs Hansa to fuckin understand why ChompChomp is his son]
He ate a particular fruit that granted him human intellect, but also made him look different from the other reindeer, and so he was forcibly ostracized from his family.
A doctor in the area adopted him before he was killed, and taught him everything he knew... but unfortunately, that same doctor died during a conflict of the country. And so the friend of the doctor's, a woman named Cruela, took ChompChomp in as her apprentice as a favor to her old friend.
The fruits are very rare, and it's in exchange for power. If you have the ability to destroy all your enemies, then all you need to do is make sure you do not come in contact with water, yes?

[Showing Hansa a panel where Zoyolo explains he can SPEAK THROUGH THE HEART and that's why everyone is able to understand him]
Intriguing -- though I do prefer the reindeer doctor, admittedly.

I didn't realise pirates had Kings.

... So he has to... gather a crew, find the compass, find the island, claim the treasure and... then he's just acknowledged as the best pirate?

[ wow. chiron stans not-one piece. ]
So it's a very long, winding and complicated heroes journey. Where there's no A to B, just A to E but via B, C, D along the way...?

A reindeer? What, is there a reindeer medical school in this comic?

[Wow.]
That's a very complicated story for a doctor that's a reindeer. Though...a fruit?
no subject
Yes, apparently in this universe, there are things called... [checking the manga real quick]
Deviled Fruits that will grant you an ability should you eat it, but in exchange, you will sink like a stone in water.
It's a problem because this world is made mostly of water, even moreso than Earth is.

How do people live on this world if they eat fruits that make then drown? What kind of logic is that?

So, literally a forbidden fruit?
